Easter in Gozo 2026: A Local’s Guide to Holy Week Traditions

Easter in Gozo 2026: A Local’s Guide to Holy Week Traditions

Spring in Gozo is a season of transformation. The fields are at their greenest, the air is filled with the scent of wild thyme, and the island prepares for its most profound cultural event: Holy Week.

If you are staying in one of our Gozo farmhouses this April, you are in for a truly authentic experience. Here is everything you need to know about celebrating Easter in Gozo 2026.

The Solemnity of Good Friday (April 3, 2026)

Good Friday is a day of deep reflection across the island. The most famous processions take place in Victoria (St. George’s Basilica) and right here in Xagħra. Starting around 18:00, you will see life-sized statues carried through the narrow streets, accompanied by somber brass bands and hooded penitents dragging heavy iron chains—a powerful sight that has remained unchanged for centuries.

The Joy of Easter Sunday (April 5, 2026)

The mood shifts completely on Sunday morning. The sadness of the Passion is replaced by bells, confetti, and the “running” of the statue of the Risen Christ (l-Irxoxt). In Xagħra, the procession is particularly joyful, often featuring local children carrying their Figolli (almond-filled Easter biscuits) to be blessed.

Traditional Tastes: Figolli and Kwareżimal

You cannot experience a Maltese Easter without the food! Be sure to visit a local bakery in Victoria or Xagħra to try:

  • Figolli: Iced, almond-filled pastries often shaped like lambs or hearts.
  • Kwareżimal: Traditional Lenten “honey” cakes (which are actually vegan-friendly!).
  • Qagħaq tal-Appostli: A ring-shaped bread topped with almonds and sesame seeds.

Stay with Us this Easter

There is no better way to experience these traditions than by staying in a traditional Gozo farmhouse. Whether you are retreating to the quiet of Għarb or staying close to the festivities in Munxar, our homes offer the perfect base for your 2026 Easter holiday.
